Seton Medical Center Hays: Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Needs
Seton Medical Center Hays opened on October 1, 2009, to serve the growing, vibrant communities of Hays County. The largest hospital in the area, the new facility covers six acres – 331,800 square feet. The first floor alone is 222,725 square feet, which equates to slightly larger than five acres.
SMCH is currently licensed for 112 beds, but has the ability to expand as demand warrants. The facility was designed to allow for this growth. For example, the patient tower at SMCH has five floors. The fourth floor was originally “warm-shelled” meaning that the entire floor was built out so that as needed, equipment and beds could be ordered to make the area operational in a short time frame. That time frame has already come. Since opening, patient volumes have exceeded projections in almost all areas, including admissions, emergency department visits and surgeries. As a result, a part of the fourth floor was opened in early May 2010 and continues to be phased in as additional staff are brought on board. The fifth floor, on the other hand, is “cold-shelled,” meaning that the rooms themselves are not yet constructed so it will require a longer lead time to prepare the floor for occupation. Still, it offers a way for services to grow into the existing facility as opposed to having to add another floor from scratch. The opportunity to expand in phases is very important as population and demand increase over time. In addition, there is the ability to add another patient tower in the future which would increase the total number of beds to 272.
Due to the higher-than-anticipated volumes, additional specialists, nurses and support services continue to be brought on board quickly to help. Staff has grown to more than 400, far greater than what was originally planned for phase one of the project. Seton is also working hard to prepare additional physicians and nurses for future expansion.
SMCH offers a full spectrum of care just minutes from where you live with the ability to adapt and grow as needed to meet the ever-increasing population of Hays County – now and for generations to come. With that peace of mind, we hope you will make SMCH your health care home.
